Healthy Schools

The Healthy Schools Programme (NHSP) is a joint initiative between DCSF and Department of Health (DH) – which promotes a whole school/whole child approach to health. It began in 1999.

Healthy Schools is intended to deliver real benefits in respect of:

  • Improvement in health and reduced health inequalities.
  • Raised pupil achievement
  • More social inclusion and
  • Closer working between health promotion providers and education establishments.

Emotional Health and Wellbeing (EHWB) is known by a variety of terms including emotional literacy and mental wellbeing.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as a “State of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.  EHWB incorporates emotional wellbeing, psychological wellbeing and social wellbeing.

The National Healthy Schools Programme has published Anti-Bullying Guidance for Schools. ABC works closely together with school staff and pupils to help them achieve Healthy School status by providing necessary training, support and materials included.
